Slidell, Louisiana
The town of Slidell, Louisiana was founded in 1882 as the northern end of the world’s longest bridge! No, not that bridge! Long before the Causeway became the world’s longest bridge in 1956, construction began on what was to become the world’s longest bridge of its time, a ralroad bridge over Lake Pontchartrain linking New Orleans to Meridian, Mississippi and all points east. The closest high and dry land north of Lake Pontchartrain was at present day Slidell, then home only to the Gause family lumber mill built in the 1830s. A town was founded in 1882 to support the massive project of building the bridge . The new town was named for John Slidell, an American politician and Confederate ambassador to France.
The New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad completed a five mile bridge over the Rigolets in 1883 giving New Orleans a direct railroad route to the east. It was a marvel of engineering at the time and for several decades it remained the longest bridge in the world. The title was eventually recaptured for Louisiana by the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Bridge which today remains the longest continuous bridge over water on the planet!
