The 3 Phases of New Construction Plumbing

The plumbing process will vary in scale and specific features but is largely the same whether it’s for new home construction, new commercial construction or renovations and additions.

1) Underground Rough-In Phase

2) Aboveground Rough-In Phase

3) Finishing Phase

1) The Underground Rough-in Phase

In South Louisiana, the typical new home or commercial building is built on a concrete slab foundation. Before the foundation is poured, all the plumbing that will be under the building including sewage and supply lines, must be perfectly assembled and tested before it is permanently sealed within and under the new concrete slab.

A qualified plumber must also locate all the public water supply and sewage connections from the public utilities and determine where these systems will enter or leave the building. The new building’s main water line will need to be connected underground to where the water meter will eventually be placed. The new building’s sewage line will need to be connected underground to the public sewage system.

Once the underground rough-in phase is complete and the slab is poured, connections to the underground plumbing can be seen extending through the newly poured concrete. The pipe ends have been temporarily sealed to prevent any concete or debris from entering the system.

2) The Aboveground Rough-in Phase

Also known as the “top-out” or “stack-out” phase, this is the phase of a new construction project that must be completed before the dry wall is installed. During the aboveground rough-in phase, all of the in-wall piping for water supply lines and gas lines must be installed and properly connected.

Plumbers must install all of the bathtubs, showers and shower bases for use with ceramic tile shower stalls. All drains and vent pipes must be installed as well. Everything from the drains to the gas and water lines must be thoroughly tested before the walls are closed up with dry wall.

3) The Finishing Phase

Also known as the “trim-out” or “trim finish” phase, this is the final phase of new construction plumbing where all the previous work finally shows results. All the new tubs, sinks, showers, toilets and fixtures personally selected by the new home or business owners are installed and their blend of function and beauty becomes apparent.

The water heater is installed, connected and tested as well as gas appliances and fireplaces. Other accessories such as dishwashers, garbage disposals and ice maker water supply lines are installed. Everything related to plumbing is tested for leaks and proper function.
