LaCombe, Louisiana

Settled by the French in the early 18th century, the town of Lacombe is not a self-governing incorporated municipality but a census-designated place much like Metairie just across the lake. The town is most likely named after Rousseau de La Combe, an early resident of New Orleans who crossed Lake Ponchartrain to settle on what is now Bayou LaCombe. LaCombe is a small town of less than 8,000 residents and home to the main campus of the Northshore Technical Community College.

LaCombe’s location on beautiful Bayou LaCombe near Lake Ponchartrain and the adjoining wildlife preserves makes the area particularly attractive to nature lovers. The area is known for the Big Branch Marsh National Wilflife Refuge, a part of which located in the middle of town! The refuge has 15,000 acres of pine woods and coastal marshes with access for hiking and kayaking. It’s also well known as a great place for bird watching. Also nearby are the St Tammany State Game Refuge, the St Tammany Wildlife Refuge and Fontainebleau State Park.

The Tammany Trace runs through LaCombe offering some of the best natural scenery along its route. The Tammany Trace is a 31 mile asphalt paved hiking, biking and horseback riding trail built on the old railroad bed formerly owned by the Illinois Central Railroad. The abandonded railway land was purchased by St Tammany Parish in 1992. The Trace begins in Covington and passes through Abita Springs, Mandeville and LaCombe before ending in Slidell.

In LaCombe, the Tammany Trace crosses scenic Bayou LaCombe. The St Tammany Parish Trailhead at Bayou LaCombe is one of the most visited spots along the Trace with a great view of the bayou. The trailhead in LaCombe includes a bridge tender, a ranger station, water fountains and rest rooms. It’s also a great place to spot local wildlife from exotic waterbirds to alligators!
