Hammond, Louisiana

With over 21,000 residents, Hammond is the largest city in Tangipahoa Parish and the second largest city on the Northshore after Slidell. Hammond is a major transportation hub in Southeast Louisiana. It is situated at the intersection of Interstate Highways 12 and 55 and US Highways 51 and 190 as well as numerous state roads. It is also a stopping point along the route of the popular “City of New Orleans” Amtrack passenger train providing daily trips between New Orleans and Chicago. There is an Amtrack station in downtown Hammond.

Hammond was first settled in 1818 by Peter Hammerdal, a Swedish immigrant who had escaped a British prisoner of war camp during the Napoleonic Wars and fled to Louisiana. Like many immigrants to America, Peter’s last name was eventually changed to a more suitable English version, Hammond, from which the city derives its name. His grave is beneath the historic Hammond Oak located in the 500 block of East Charles Street in Hammond.

By 1854 the ralroads had connected Hammond to New Orleans. By the late 1800s, Hammond had become a popular stopping point for rail passengers from New Orleans traveling north to escape the heat and humidity as well as mosquito borne disease outbreaks that so often ravaged New Orleans at the time.

The City of Hammond was officially chartered by the State of Louisiana in 1889. Since then Hammond has continued to grow in size and importance as a transportation center. Despite it’s growth, the citizens of Hammond have worked hard to preserve the architecture and charater of the oldest neighborhoods in the city with the creation of the Hammond Historic District.

Today, Hammond is home to Southeastern Louisiana University, Northshore Technical Community College and major hospitals and clinics that serve Tangipahoa Parish. Hammond is also a major training site for the Louisiana Army National Guard. It is also the home of the Louisiana Air National Guard’s 236th Combat Communications Squadron.
