Amite City (Amite), Louisiana

Amite City, commonly just called Amite, was the site of a Choctaw village and settled by the French beginning in the mid 18th century. The town derives its name from the French word for friendship “amitié” as the early French settlers were known to have a long standing peaceful relationship with the native Choctaw.

With the arrival of the railroad in 1852, many wealthy citizens of New Orleans built country homes in Amite as an escape from the mosquitos that brought yellow fever and other diseases to the city. In 1855, Amite was chartered by the state and incorporated as Amite City in 1861. 1869, Amite City was chosen as the parish seat for Tangipahoa Parish and remains so today.

By the mid 20th century, dairy farms and strawberry farms began to replace cotton farms and timber harvesting as the primary industries in the area. Today, Tangipahoa Parish is a major center for Louisiana’s dairy farming industry and the largest producer of strawberries in the state.

With the southern end of Tangipahoa Parish bounded by Lake Maurepas, Lake Ponchartrain and Pass Manchac, Amite City has become a major oyster processing center and home of the annual Amite Oyster Festival. In classic Louisiana style, the festival includes a parade, a royalty pageant, a baby pageant, a royal presentation gala, cook-offs, a fashion show, a 5K race and plenty of Louisiana oysters, Louisiana cuisine and live Louisiana music.
